Copford is a village situated just West of Colchester in Essex.
The club was formed in the mid 1960s and until 1972 had relied upon a rented ground provided by a local private school. It was offered the opportunity to develop its own ground and clubhouse on a rough cut meadow within sight of Copford Hall and the 12th Century Church which houses some of the finest examples of fresco painting in Europe. Undeterred by the fact that they would have to share the playing area with a mature oak tree, club members began to prepare the wicket and build a clubhouse.
After one rather nomadic season the club began using the new ground in 1974. The local village cricket scene began to develop rapidly, especially following the introduction in 1976 of an organised league, of which Copford was a founder member.
During the next twenty years the club achieved a number of ‘honours’ in the National Village Championship, the local league and in colt’s cricket. In 1997 the club entered the Two Counties League.
In 2001 Colneside joined Copford and one team is now entered into the North Essex League on Sundays, as well as the two teams playing in the Two Counties League on Saturdays. The colts have a thriving membership of over 100 boys and girls.
